Hi There,
Adam here from Transparent Labs.
I've got a fun one for you today! Research shows that of the easiest ways to protect your performance is found in something that a ton of people overlook: hydration.
I know, I know, you've heard it before: "Drink more water." But stay with me, because the research is worth paying attention to.
There were a couple of big takeaways.
First, the performance hit from dehydration is real and measurable.
Across the studies, body mass losses of just 1.3 to 4.2 percent from fluid loss were enough to meaningfully impair continuous exercise performance. To put that in context, a 185-pound person losing 2% of their body mass in fluid is down about 3.7 pounds of water. The crazy part is that's not even extreme. That's a normal training session in warm conditions without adequate intake.
What makes it worse is that thirst is actually the lagging indicator, meaning by the time you feel it, you're already fighting from behind.
Second, (and this is the part I found most interesting): rehydrating before your next session actually reversed a significant portion of that performance decline. Fluid intake improved continuous exercise performance with a meaningful effect size across the trials. The improvement was most pronounced in hotter environments, but the signal was consistent.
Third and finally, this impact to performance isn't just on your legs or arms; it affects your brain as well. Cognitive performance took hits too, including focus, decision-making, and mood. If you've ever had a workout where nothing felt right mentally and you couldn't figure out why, your hydration status is worth considering.
Here's my practical takeaway for you: most people think about hydration during a workout, but the research suggests the window that matters most might actually be the hours before. Getting ahead of it, rather than catching up mid-session, is where the real difference is made, especially in these summer months.
It's one of the least complicated things you can do, and based on the evidence, it's one of the highest-return habits in your arsenal.
Have a great week! I'm proud of you.
Yours in transparency,
Adam

PS: Speaking of hydration, we did some polling recently on the office's favorite flavors of Hydrate and there were two clear winners: White Peach and Blackberry Lemonade. Let me know if you've tried them or have a different pick!
