This week’s featured art piece from the AKC Museum of the Dog’s collection is Day Dreams, by Marguerite Kirmse (English, 1885 – 1954), 20th c. Print. Gift of William Brainard Jr. In her day, Marguerite Kirmse was one of the most popular printmakers in America. In 1928, she sold more prints than any other artist in the country. She worked almost exclusively on portraits of dogs, and Scotties were among her favorites, as she had co-owned a kennel with fellow artist Edwin Megargee. Additionally, the breed’s scruffy black outline and lively character lent themselves especially well to the bold black-and-white qualities of the etching medium.

Everywhere Ryen Lung goes, people tell him, “I got a Corgi because of you.” That’s because the Bay Area resident loves to create YouTube videos of his Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Gatsby—and they’ve amassed a huge online following. Back in 2014 when Lung brought the little puppy home, his friends and family were surprised by his breed choice, sometimes even calling it a little “weird.” Like Lung, they were previously unfamiliar with the breed.

Stealing food off the kitchen counter, also called counter-surfing, is a common problem for dog owners. Large dog breeds may place their snouts or front paws on the counter for a forbidden snack, but any dog can indulge. Some small-breed dogs can even jump from the floor straight onto the countertop!
