Editor's Note

Hey AlgoDev!

It's Marco from the Algorand Foundation’s DevRel team. You might also know me as lazystar on Discord. Since I managed to mess up my old Twitter/X account, you might not know me as @LazystarDotAlgo yet. 😁

We have been busy with conferences and workshops over the past couple of weeks and had to skip last month's newsletter. But this time, we have great things coming for you. It's peak hackathon season, and you will have many opportunities to meet us in many locations all around the world!

Let's see if we can find a hackathon near you, and we hope to see you in person soon.

The World's Largest Hackathon

Last month, bolt.new hosted The World’s Largest Hackathon, an event that brought together thousands of builders and creators from around the globe across multiple tracks.

The Algorand Foundation took part as the exclusive blockchain partner, and the response from developers was nothing short of remarkable — more than 500 teams chose Algorand to showcase what’s possible on the network, pushing the boundaries of innovation and experimentation.

A special congratulations goes to Sergiusz Kozubek, who secured first place in the blockchain track with his project StartSnap.fun. His submission stood out for its originality and polish of execution, and it will be exciting to watch how the project develops from here.

Hack Berlin

Mark your calendars! On September 3 and 4, we’re hosting the Algorand Hackathon: AI Meets Blockchain at w3.hub in Berlin, together with our friends at 42berlin and AI Agents Berlin.

This is your chance to build, experiment, and push boundaries at the intersection of AI and blockchain. Whether you’re an experienced Algorand developer or simply curious about what happens when these two technologies come together, you’ll get valuable hands-on time with Smart Contract development in TypeScript and Python.

Hack Harvard

On September 6 and 7, 2025, Algorand will return to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where it all began. In partnership with easyA, we’re excited to host a hackathon at Harvard, bringing fresh energy and new ideas to the place where Algorand’s journey first started.

Hack Bangalore

Next up, the Algorand foundation is headed to PyCon India 2025 in Bangalore, from September 12-14. Leading up to that we will host a hackathon together with Rise In at The Hub, on September 11 and 12. More info following shortly!

From there, we will use the moment and take the short trip to Colombo, Sri Lanka and will host a workshop together with IIT on September 17 and 18. Stay tuned for more info on this one as well!

Hack Istanbul

Algorand will also be in Istanbul for a hackathon in partnership with Rise In. Scheduled for September 28–29, it will bring the community together for two days of building and experimentation. There’s no event page yet, but more details will follow soon — so stay tuned!

Algorand Foundation Tech Roadmap

The Algorand Foundation tech roadmap was recently unveiled, pointing the way toward less complexity, broader adoption, and the bleeding edge.

Alongside AlgoKit 4.0, it introduces Intermezzo, a custodial solution that streamlines blockchain integration and key management, already in use for WorldChess’ loyalty program.

Also coming is the Rocca Wallet, an open-source self-custody wallet designed for everyday users. It does not require seed phrases and offers a simple Web2-like experience with decentralized security.

Technical Updates

Opt-In P2P: For those who can't find a hackathon nearby, get into closer touch with your peers with opt-in peer-to-peer in the latest release of go-algorand.

Algokit-CLI: We added support for modern package managers (uv and pnpm) to AlgoKit CLI, introduced new configuration commands (algokit config js-package-manager and algokit config py-package-manager) and bootstrap commands (algokit project bootstrap uv and algokit project bootstrap pnpm) alongside the existing Poetry and npm support.

Lora: We added versioning! Lora is now being properly versioned, so we can announce new features by version, and users know what version and environment they are in. Also, we added local state for applications - users can now view the application's local state in Lora. (Demo)

Client Generators: They now have a new minimal mode for our client libraries (Python and TypeScript) that dramatically reduces file sizes while maintaining core functionality. This update delivers significant improvements across the board - full clients are now 37-42% smaller, while the new minimal mode achieves an impressive 64-78% size reduction compared to previous versions. For example, the NFD client dropped from 645KB to just 143KB in minimal mode.
