Andy, I’ve spent time at the U.S.-Mexico border and in U.S. detention centers, and I’ve seen and documented horrifying human rights violations. I’m sure there are many more abuses still to uncover.
The Trump administration has created a total human rights disaster. They are targeting refugees and asylum seekers for detention and deportation, and have shut down the refugee program and any right to seek asylum entirely.
The U.S. is not only mistreating asylum seekers, it's forcing them to remain in life-threatening situations. On our research trips, I’ve met many brave, resilient families and individuals who have been stranded in danger at the border, are being deported to the countries they fled, third countries they’ve never been, or held in inhumane detention centers.
How cruel can the Trump administration be to turn away people who have endured deadly journeys through the Darién Gap or escaped persecution? Cruelty is, of course, the point. Criminalization and demonization of migrants and refugees is part of their authoritarian playbook.
I worry every day for the children separated from their parents. For asylum seekers denied safety at the border. For refugees who have been in the U.S. for decades only to be uprooted and deported. For families ripped apart by ICE.
While our leaders are actively pushing people into harm, our movement is extending compassion and a lifeline to those in need. Thanks to our grassroots efforts, we’ve successfully stopped more funding for ICE’s deportation machine, secured justice for asylum seekers, and freed people unjustly detained.
