How Cherokee Beans Connect a Community to Its Roots

When the Cherokee people were forced off their homeland in the 1830s, some of them made the long winter trek to Oklahoma carrying beans from back home. Those who survived the grueling journey put these beans in the earth in the new Cherokee Nation, where they have been planted and harvested by families for many decades. In 2006, the Cherokee Nation founded a seed bank for these beloved crops.

In Some Parks, Trash Becomes Treasure

When a new worker at the Fire Island National Seashore stumbled across a pile of garbage a few years back, he let the boss know so it could be cleaned up, only to discover that this trash had to stay. It had been there for decades and was now considered historic. Stuff strewn around can be a window into understanding a landscape and how people have used it. That’s how decades-old bottles and cans came to be cultural heritage objects in the custody of Fire Island staff.
