The Wondrous History of Waffles

Waffles have long been a familiar sight at the table. Even before the first-known waffle recipe was recorded in 1393, people had been cooking batter-based cakes and wafers quickly in special iron pans. The 20th-century electric waffle maker made things significantly easier, but it would take a trio of Californian brothers to make waffles an everyday breakfast, rather than a special treat.

Burke & Hare Murder Dolls

Nearly a decade after the notorious “Anatomy Murderers” William Burke and William Hare were apprehended in 1828, two boys discovered a collection of tiny dolls, each nested into a miniature coffin hidden away in the city park called Arthur’s Seat. Theories on the dolls’ significance ranged from witchcraft to children’s toys, but eventually, it was suggested that the 17 tiny figures could be effigies for the Anatomy Murderers’ victims.

A House Full of Florida History

The May-Stringer House in Brooksville has lived many lives since it was first built before the Civil War. Over the decades it has functioned as a private residence, a hospital, and eventually a museum preserving local history.
