These days, astronomers are fairly certain that, if we do encounter other forms of life in the universe, they’ll be located in a galaxy far, far away. However, in the early 19th century, it still seemed possible that alien life might exist in our own solar system. In fact, many preeminent thinkers—most notably Nikola Tesla—believed E.T.s were close enough that, with a very strong signal, we might be able to communicate with them. The most widely explored method of communication involved giant mirrors, which contemporary scientists proposed could flash lights across space to create signals to aliens— a version of interplanetary telegraphy.
