Jannik Sinner stands on the brink of gaining entry to one of the most exclusive clubs in men's tennis at the 2025 US Open.

Should the Italian successfully defend his title at the New York major, he would become just the seventh man in the Open Era to win three major titles in one season following his previous triumphs this year at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Yet that achievement is not the only thing on the line for the Italian this fortnight.

If Sinner falls short in his bid to become the first player to win consecutive men’s singles titles at Flushing Meadows since Roger Federer in 2008, the door will be open for Carlos Alcaraz to reclaim No. 1 in the PIF ATP Rankings. Alcaraz simply needs to match or better Sinner’s US Open result to end his great rival’s 14-month reign.

The omens in New York are good for both Sinner and Alcaraz, who played finals at Roland Garros in June and Wimbledon in July, and have between them won the past seven majors. Yet a chasing pack that includes former US Open finalists Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz, as well as four-time champion Novak Djokovic, is not to be ignored.

"At the moment, me and Carlos, we are sharing big trophies, but at the same time, things can change. You never know,” said Sinner ahead of his New York campaign. “There are great, great players out there, and the way to the final, it's very difficult to get there. So let's see if this continues. I always say we have to improve, because players, they understand us now, how we are.”

Marton Fucsovics steadied the ship after some late drama to prevail against Botic van de Zandschulp in the final at the Winston-Salem Open. Fucsovics had squandered a 6-3, 5-1 lead at the ATP 250 in North Carolina but he eventually got over the line with a rock-solid tie-break display. It was the third tour-level crown of the 33-year-old Fucsovics’ career.
