In his draft of an amendment to the Constitution to authorize the Louisiana Purchase, Thomas Jefferson included a provision that would have constitutionalized Native rights to "occupancy and soil" as well as to self government, but ultimately did not seek the amendment.

Join University of Florida Professor Jeremy Bailey as he examines Jefferson's case for assimilation and sheds light on an important yet understudied feature of the political thought of the American founding.
