On Thursday we’ll publish our first two books of 2026 – Niki Harré’s account of her year practising as a secular priest, The Calling, and a collection of poems by Helen Rickerby which weather and whirl through both mid-life and national crises, aptly titled My Bourgeois Apocalypse.

We’re also announcing launch events for our April books: we’ve got a delightful collection by the inimitable Elizabeth Smither and a raucous oral history of The Clean from Richard Langston, both in stores from 9 April. We’ll be celebrating the former at Lamplight Books in Auckland and are sending the latter on a book tour starting in Dunedin and set to feature lots of music, live and on vinyl.

Finally, to our Ockham New Zealand Book Awards finalists, Sophie, Anna and Phil, e whakamana ana i tēnei whakatutukitanga nui!

The Calling

A Year Exploring What the Secular World Can Learn from Religion

Niki Harré

In 2021, psychology professor and atheist Niki Harré spent a year as a self-appointed secular priest. She attended church, immersed herself in Christian writing, created bespoke vows, and delivered regular Sunday services. The Calling details Harré’s developing sense of what it means to regularly turn towards humility, the unknown, reflection, and listening to and caring for the other.

My Bourgeois Apocalypse

Helen Rickerby

In her new collection – a poetic collage-essay-memoir – Helen Rickerby crafts poems out of personal correspondence and sentences from her journals, cataloguing her life over a tumultuous period of lockdowns, terrorist attacks and mid-life crises.

My Bourgeois Apocalypse is a work of fragments encompassing the whole of a life.

Ockham New Zealand Book Award shortlist announced – including three AUP titles

Congratulations to Sophie van Waardenberg and Anna Jackson, both of whom have had their work recognised in the Poetry shortlist, and to Philip Garnock-Jones, whose natural history of New Zealand flowers, He Puāwai, is one of four finalists in the Illustrated Non-fiction category. Ka mau te wehi to these authors and all of the finalists for this year’s awards.
