Have you ever wondered why cats sleep so much? It seems like for every burst of feline zoomies, playful round of skippity baps, or mischievous noise coming from the other room, there’s almost triple the time spent on snoozing and slumber. And it’s true — cats usually sleep anywhere from 12 to 16 hours a day. Garfield even had a special term for it: “nap attack.” But why, exactly, do cats need so much sleep?

For starters, cats are predators, and predators need a lot of sleep to restore those short bursts of energy. But we don’t want to spoil all the answers for you. We've created a video to take you inside Nap Central Station (aka Cat World at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary), where we unpack the reasons why felines just can’t seem to keep their eyes open. And we do want to apologize in advance — watching this video might cause overwhelming sleepiness and a desire to curl up in a ball in the nearest sunbeam.
