When Mai Tai arrived at the Sanctuary, he was unsure of his new surroundings and wary of new people. Everything was unfamiliar and scary. So the team put together a plan to help him become more comfortable and make friends. Turns out, the big dog is a huge marshmallow. He just needs time and patience to build love and trust.

Ironically, the big softie couldn’t actually have soft toys; he had a history of ingesting them. But he loved snuggling, so under careful supervision, caregivers decided to try giving him a blanket. And instead of chewing on the blanket, he did just the opposite: carrying it around with him and treating it with the utmost care.

With patience, consistency, and more than a few blankets, Mai Tai’s world and his circle of friends grew. Each positive interaction with a person built on the last, and Mai Tai was able to settle into himself, showing who he truly is. For a dog who was once so wary of his surroundings, the quiet, cozy moments say everything about how far he’s come.
