Are you following the ongoing saga around the administration’s attempts to renovate the Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C.?

I’ve been unable to peel my attention away from updates about the Pool, which appears to be rejecting its makeover… and this morning, I stopped and — pardon the pun — reflected on what it could all mean for human rights.

We can’t simply paint over something and expect our problems to go away — we have to go deeper. We have to gather information, survey the area, develop a plan, muster support, and then make it happen. These processes take time, but when they are well-conceived and thoughtfully executed, they WORK.

And that’s exactly what we do at Amnesty. We get to the root of injustice. We’re on the ground gathering evidence and testimony. And we’ve built a 10 million-strong movement that is always quick to mobilize in the face of human rights crises, while fighting to end harmful policies and dismantle systems that enable human rights abuses in the first place.

⛓️‍💥 Alligator Alcatraz is SHUT DOWN ⛓️‍💥

Major news: Amid Amnesty's relentless pressure campaign to close Alligator Alcatraz, as of last week, all people have been removed from the facility.

Our efforts are working. Alligator Alcatraz is now nothing more than a cruel and failed experiment. But we cannot rest. Many people were transferred to other jails that are acting as Alligator Alcatraz “copy cats.”

We MUST SHUT THEM ALL DOWN in favor of immigration policies that put human rights first.

🎊 GOOD NEWS: ANDREA IS FREE 🎊

Andrea Pedro-Francisco is finally free from ICE detention! Andrea has been detained by ICE since February despite suffering from a large ovarian cyst, which was causing her extreme pain and posing a risk to her life.

She was denied adequate medical care while in detention. Amnesty mobilized into action, generated over 15,000 letters to ICE Field Office Director, and we are THRILLED to report that she was released from detention this month. Andrea is at home with her family and able to undergo surgery.

🔎 STOP MASS SURVEILLANCE BILL 🔎

A dangerous surveillance law is up for renewal in the U.S — it’s called Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). It essentially gives the government — THIS White House — the authority to conduct mass warrantless surveillance for another five years.

Amnesty has always raised concerns about this authority... but with artificial intelligence supercharging how information can be used, it’s even more frightening. Amid our pressure campaign, the bill has stalled in Congress, but we need to keep the momentum going to ensure this is voted down.

We don’t want to live in a surveillance state.
It’s up to us to make that clear to our lawmakers.
