In June, I published an exclusive piece revealing that the Justice Department and Commodity Futures Trading Commission had opened an investigation into former Congressman George Santos’ trading activity on the prediction market site Kalshi.
The next day, I received a call from a blocked number: it was George Santos himself. He was furious. He name-called and attacked the reputation of NPR. He even went so far as to threaten me. He was trying to discredit me, my reporting and this organization because he didn’t like the facts of our story.
My piece was written with the help of three sources and vetted by my editor before publication. Santos’ claim that it was riddled with errors is simply untrue; therefore, the story will stand. The piece won’t be taken down or changed in response to his claims or threats.
I'm proud to work for an organization that stands behind me, and the facts. As a journalist, I trust that NPR will never ask me to bend to special interests. We report the facts because you have a right to know. My colleagues and I serve you.
The free press doesn’t just happen. People like you power it. And with federal funding for public media eliminated, we must all take action to protect it.
Please consider starting a recurring gift to sustain public media as we transform to thrive without federal funding. Your support ensures we can continue reporting stories that serve the public.
