I have a confession to make. Last year, I let a stunning late August tomato sit on the counter for an entire week (!) after picking it out at the market. It sat and stared at me, threatening to go mushy, as I scrolled through pages of bookmarked recipes looking for The One. After shelling out the big bucks at the farmers market, I dreaded the thought of “wasting” such perfect provisions on a meh meal.

This summer, I’m bidding adieu to such punishing perfectionism and placing myself in the very capable hands of the BA Test Kitchen. They’ve designed a whole collection of recipes that let my locally-grown haul truly shine. No duds, all stars, I guarantee it.

Read on for:

  • The 2026 Farmers Market Challenge with eight brand-new recipes
  • A sheet-pan chicken to make the most of peach season
  • Editor-approved tote bags for your precious produce
  • A 3-ingredient cocktail for the hottest days

The 2026 Farmers Market Challenge

BY EDITORS OF BON APPÉTIT

It’s high time to welcome back the Farmers Market Challenge. We’ve reached Peak Produce, a.k.a. the most wonderful time of the year. This year we’ve got eight brand-new recipes from the Test Kitchen: three meals, three sides-slash-snacks, and two desserts.

Each one highlights a different summer stunner, like sheet-pan chicken and peaches cooked entirely under the broiler. Or spiced, brown-buttered tomatoes, which would happily accompany any and every protein (try grilled sausage or a cold bean salad). And don’t miss out on our oh-so-buttery skillet cake that features cooked and raw raspberries (you get the best of both worlds, etc.). So grab your largest tote and floppiest hat—the farmers market is waiting.

Sheet-Pan Hot Honey Chicken and Peaches

BY REBECCA FIRKSER

No grill needed for this sweet and spicy, just-charred-enough chicken. We’re no strangers to the beauty of hot honey–glazed protein (looking at you, salmon), but the flavors also work wonders with sweet summer peaches. While you should look for the best stone fruit the farmers market can provide, if you’re out of luck, know that even the most mediocre, slightly underripe peach will go sweet and juicy as it mingles with the honey mixture in the heat. Don’t forget the crusty bread to mop up every bite of saucy goodness.

This week, we’re sharing a gift link on the house. For full access to all of our thousands of Test Kitchen–developed recipes, please consider subscribing.
