Fluctuating oil prices driven by the Iran conflict have renewed interest in electric vehicles—but federal policy supporting EV adoption has weakened and what remains is an uneven patchwork of state-level statutes, rules, and incentives. Shriya Methkupally and Mark Muro benchmark EV policies across all 50 states and the District of Columbia, finding that while states like California and Massachusetts lead, many others lag on key measures such as charging infrastructure and procurement, leaving residents with higher costs and fewer vehicle choices.
