Federal Advocacy Efforts to Support the National Institutes of Health

On May 20, patients, caregivers, advocates, and families from across the country came to Capitol Hill to send a clear message to Congress: Americans want cures, not cuts.

CF advocates and Foundation staff joined the collective effort, which met with more than 80 Congressional offices, to share how early-stage NIH-supported research helped drive the progress and transformation seen in cystic fibrosis today. These conversations reinforced the importance of sustained federal investment to advance new treatments and ultimately a cure for all people with CF.

The meetings helped build support for the request of $51.3 billion for NIH in FY27, but more work remains. The Foundation is continuing to educate lawmakers on the importance of robust NIH funding and the real-world impacts when research slows.

To support these efforts, the Foundation is seeking feedback from the research community on grant delays, application review pauses, slowed approvals, hiring impacts, project disruptions, and other challenges in the current NIH environment. These examples will help policymakers better understand the impact on scientific progress and patient communities. Please reach out to Scott Sherwood, Manager of Advocacy & Government Affairs to share your experience. Information will be de-identified to the extent requested.
