Chainalysis Research and Analysis

While selecting the right blockchain based on speed, cost, and contagion risk is crucial for any digital asset strategy, it is only half the equation. The other half is continuous, rigorous monitoring. As regulators increasingly mandate on-chain transparency as a baseline for compliance, institutions entering the digital asset space must actively watch for illicit flows.

An analysis of Chainalysis KYT (Know Your Transaction) configurations across hundreds of global organizations reveals an industry deploying increasingly strict compliance alerting frameworks:

  • The industry's compliance baseline has tightened significantly, with nearly half of all organizations onboarded in 2026 operating at alerting standards that would have placed them in the top 10% of strictness just six years ago.
  • Traditional financial institutions maintain materially stricter thresholds than crypto exchanges, setting lower dollar-detection floors for both illicit and non-illicit categories to tighten baseline monitoring.
  • A critical vulnerability remains in indirect exposure, where monitoring thresholds are often 10 to 20 times more lenient than direct thresholds. This gap is widest for categories like ransomware, fraud shops, and sanctioned jurisdictions, creating pathways that sophisticated actors can exploit.
  • While organizations worldwide set uniformly stringent configurations for direct exposure, geography heavily shapes how financial institutions and exchanges monitor indirect exposure to suspect flows, reflecting varied regional compliance and socio-legal environments.
