Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan Hospital has been a beacon of light in its Haitian community for nine years

Nine years ago, something remarkable happened in the small coastal town of Côtes-de-Fer, Haiti: the opening of a hospital.

Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan Hospital (BJSH), built through support from CMMB donors, became a beacon of hope for nearly 20,000 people in one of Haiti's most remote and underserved communities. Despite the natural disasters, gang violence, and political instability that have rocked this island nation since, BJSH has remained open and operating. Mothers have safely delivered babies. Children have survived illnesses that could have been deadly. Families have known they always had somewhere to turn.

This year, BJSH also took a giant leap towards sustaining this level of service far into the future, thanks to a new solar power system that allows the hospital to run on the power of the sun. This system provides energy day and night for the emergency room, the surgical center, and every person in a hospital bed.

This is what perseverance looks like. It is years of transporting fuel through dangerous circumstances and instability, and a long-term solution of shipping, transporting, and installing solar panels in the midst of incredible instability. This is what nine years of commitment, community, and compassion have built. But we can't stop here.
