In the heart of Baguga, South Sudan, Martina once feared what so many women in her community feared: that when the moment of childbirth came, help would be too far away.

For years, reaching a health facility meant a dangerous motorbike ride, sometimes in the dark. Essential medicines were scarce. Mosquito nets were sometimes hard to come by. And the loss of mothers and children, losses that should have been preventable, were a painful fact of life.

Today, Martina is a proud mother. Her son, Clever Juma, was born safely at a health facility. "Before (CMMB’s Children and Mothers Partnerships program) CHAMPS, we experienced avoidable deaths in the community," she told us. "Now, our families can access essential medications freely and in adequate quantities. We no longer hear stories of death and untreated illness in our community."

Martina has learned to recognize danger signs during pregnancy, like heavy bleeding and severe abdominal pain. She knows when to seek care, and she knows that care is there when she needs it. "For us, access to healthcare means everything," she says. "After years of suffering, I am grateful."
