Alt-text: Elizabeth, a mother in Kenya, stands with her four children after surgery
Elizabeth with her children after eye surgery.

Andy,

Elizabeth watched as, one by one, the bandages came off. Her children opened their eyes, and saw the world again.

For a decade, four of Elizabeth's six children had been blind. She became everything they needed: their eyes, their guide, their anchor. The family survived on one meal a day. She rarely left the house. The weight of it all pushed her into depression.

But she never stopped loving them, and never stopped seeking a better life.

In 2024, Elizabeth's family enrolled in CMMB’s Sustainable Livelihoods Project. Economic empowerment became food and proper bedding. Our staff tracked down specialists. And earlier this year, all four children underwent cataract surgery at Kwale Eye Centre.

GIVE IN HONOR OF MOTHERS AROUND THE WORLD

The next morning, the bandages came off.

"I was incredibly happy," Elizabeth said softly. "My stress started fading. I felt like I was finally in the light."

Today, her children are dressing themselves, moving independently, and getting ready to return to school.

On Mother's Day and all year long, we are supporting mothers like Elizabeth through expansion of healthcare services, economic empowerment programs, and other lifesaving initiatives around the world. With your support, we can change the world one mother at a time.
