Trump's SAVE Act Failed. Congress is trying to sneak it in through the back door.

Tell Congress: Reject The Save Act, Protect Our Freedom To Vote

Email,

Donald Trump continues to fixate on making it harder for Black communities to vote. He even refused to sign a bipartisan housing bill that had already passed Congress, pledging to grind Congress to a halt until lawmakers pass the SAVE America Act.

Now, Speaker Mike Johnson says Republicans will try AGAIN to force the bill through when Congress returns next week by using the budget reconciliation process — a strategy that would require only a simple majority in the Senate to pass.

The stakes could not be higher. Color Of Change refuses to accept a future where politicians change the rules whenever Black communities organize, vote, and demand accountability. Lawmakers need to hear from all of us before they cast a vote — and we need to move quickly.

For generations, attacks on voting rights have been disguised as "election security." During Jim Crow, politicians used poll taxes, literacy tests, intimidation, and violence to keep Black people away from the ballot box. When those tactics became illegal, new barriers took their place. The language changed, but the goal stayed the same. The SAVE Act is the latest version of that playbook.

The bill would create new nationwide voter identification requirements, expand the federal government's role in reviewing voter rolls, and effectively require Americans to produce a passport or birth certificate in order to register to vote. Twenty-one million American citizens do not have ready access to those documents. Millions of low-income voters would face costly and complicated bureaucratic processes to exercise a constitutional right.

Trump's decision to hold a widely popular, bipartisan housing bill hostage sends a clear message to Congress: making it harder to vote matters more than addressing the cost of living crisis. And he is betting that enough lawmakers will cave to his demands.

Already, Speaker Johnson has shown he’s willing to do virtually whatever Trump asks, but the Senate is not yet on board with this plan — and we need massive public outcry to ensure they stand strong.

Across the country, we are seeing coordinated efforts to make it harder for Black communities to build and exercise political power. After the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, lawmakers in states like Alabama and Louisiana quickly moved to redraw congressional maps to take away Black political power.

Now Trump is demanding Congress take that effort nationwide. We will not allow it to happen.
