The House could vote as soon as TOMORROW on a massive reconciliation package that would hand Donald Trump $10 billion to make it harder for millions of Americans to vote.

Trump’s obsession with the SAVE America Act is not letting up — and his latest strategy is to include money to help states build the infrastructure for new voter ID requirements in a bill that also will send Trump $73 BILLION for his war on Iran. While families worry about the cost of groceries, rent, and health care, Congress is attempting to spend billions building new barriers between Black voters and the ballot box.

For generations, attacks on voting rights have been dressed up as "election security." During Jim Crow, politicians used poll taxes, literacy tests, intimidation, and violence to keep Black people from voting. After the Voting Rights Act outlawed many of those tactics, efforts to restrict access to the ballot box did not disappear — they evolved. Voter ID laws became one of the new tools used to make voting harder while claiming to make elections more secure. The language and tactics may change, but the target is the same: prevent Black people from voting.

Trump is so desperate to force these changes that earlier this month, he held up the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, a landmark, bipartisan legislation designed to boost home construction, curb corporate buying of single-family homes, and lower national housing costs because he wants to cheat the American people and disenfranchise Black voters. It passed anyway.

Then, this past week the House passed a bill funding the State Department that also includes provisions from the SAVE Act. Trump-aligned hardliners in the House are also threatening to halt other essential legislation — including veterans' benefits expansions and the National Defense Authorization Act — unless the Senate votes on the SAVE Act.

Now, Republicans are seeking to bypass the normal 60-vote threshold in the Senate to sneak provisions of the SAVE Act into a reconciliation package — and they’re racing to do it before they go on recess this week. We know who will pay the price. At a moment when the Supreme Court has gutted the Voting Rights Act, states are rushing to eliminate majority-Black districts, and politicians are openly targeting Black political power, we must demand Congress expand access to the ballot box — not create new obstacles.

Black communities have fought too hard and sacrificed too much to watch politicians resurrect voter suppression efforts any way they can. That is why we must act now, making sure Congress hears from thousands of us before the next vote.
