Researchers are harnessing the capabilities of an active virus to selectively infect and destroy glioblastoma cells while building an army of immune cells that penetrate and persist deep within brain tumors. Community outreach specialists at Dana-Farber are connecting with Boston communities to raise awareness about cancer prevention, screening, and available resources.
“On top of education, our goal is to show the community that Dana-Farber is here for everyone, regardless of neighborhood or language,” explains Tula Q. Mahl, MA, director of Community Health. “By reaching out directly to the communities that have been historically marginalized, we aim to address some of the cancer outcome disparities that exist in and around Boston.”
For Meghan McLyman, a patient with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), hearing from others who had similar experiences showed her that “other people have gone through this and made it out and are successful.” The One-to-One Program at Dana-Farber matches patients with trained mentors who have gone through similar experiences.
