Let’s go to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex!

Just a short drive from downtown Sacramento, you can find a massive haven for migrating birds: the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex! Starting in 1937, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service began creating this system of refuges to support migrating birds threatened by the loss of wetlands. Today, its wetlands are a vital wintering spot for waterfowl like geese, ducks, swans and many more traveling birds.

It’s called a “Complex” because it’s actually six distinct refuges close together. These refuges were mostly created in response to the loss of most of California’s wetlands, largely due to agriculture. Thanks to the creation of this refuge complex, birds along the Pacific Flyway can continue to find winter habitat in the Sacramento Valley!

Meet California’s wildlife

Over 300 bird and mammal species can be found in the refuges, including immediately recognizable birds like herons, hawks, pelicans, swans and more! The region’s migratory bird path is definitely the major draw, and the peak birding season runs from autumn to early winter. If you’re looking to see wild wonders without wings, the Sacramento Refuge Complex is also home to familiar animals like deer, coyotes and turtles.

What can I do there?

You may want to start your journey through the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex at the site’s Visitor Center, which is open on Fridays. There you’ll find a Discovery Room and displays, as well as tips from staff on birding hot spots. The Complex also hosts vehicle tours, as well as a number of trails for hiking and bicycling. However you explore the refuge complex, you’ll want to make sure you bring your binoculars to check out birds on the move. And if you’re taking the day to spend time in nature, consider checking out one of the numerous national forests close to the refuge complex, including Mendocino National Forest to the west and Tahoe National Forest to the east!
