Friend,

Right now, the FDA is asking for your input about how it reviews chemicals already used in our food. This is one of the first opportunities for the public to weigh in under the FDA’s updated review process – and comments are being accepted only through July 13.

Two food chemicals are open for public comment, both of which are on EWG's updated Dirty Dozen Guide to Food Chemicals:

•
BHT: A synthetic preservative used in frozen pizza and many other packaged foods. BHT's breakdown in the body can trigger oxidative stress and tumor promotion.
•
ADA: A chemical dough conditioner and flour bleaching agent used in some baked goods, linked in some studies to potential genetic mutations and cancer concerns.

For decades, chemicals like these have remained in our food with little ongoing safety review after approval. That’s why this public comment period matters. The FDA is deciding how these chemicals will be reviewed going forward, and public input can help strengthen oversight.

Support efforts to show the FDA that Americans want stronger, science-based reviews and greater transparency about what’s in our food.

It only takes a minute to weigh in on both chemicals, and we’ve provided sample language to make it easy.

Submit your comment by July 13 and urge the FDA to put public health first.
