The Brazilian Cerrado savanna sustains 5% of all plants and animals on the planet. Its magical landscape is home to rare plants and majestic jaguars – stewarded by Indigenous people and local communities.
But giant agribusiness companies like US-based Bunge Limited are driving land grabbing and ecosystem destruction in the Cerrado, converting vibrant habitats into bleak stretches of soy plantations.
At Friends of the Earth, we’re fighting to prevent Bunge and other large corporations from contributing to human rights violations and destroying precious ecosystems – but one of the key tools we use to do that is under attack, Andy!
Right now, anyone who holds shares in a company – including everyday people like pension holders, retirees, workers with 401(k) retirement plans, and small investors – can submit shareholder proposals to request that companies take a specific action, such as protecting human rights and the environment in their operations. But Trump’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is considering a rule that would limit shareholder proposals – and eliminate the ability of everyday people to push companies to do better.
We can’t let this happen, Andy – and if you have a pension, 401(k) retirement plan, or any other investments, you can sign our petition to help stop the SEC from stripping the right of shareholders to make proposals. Demand the SEC reject attempts to undermine or eliminate shareholder proposals – and defend the right of shareholders to push their companies to protect vibrant ecosystems!
