I’ve had a copy of Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove on my to-read shelf since mid-summer 2020. I don’t know what took me so long to finally crack it open (I dragged my feet straight through its BookTok takeover of 2025), but I devoured it once I did. Don’t be dissuaded by its length—the paperback clocks in at almost 900 pages—because the story itself is disarmingly propulsive. The writing is economical and yet rich with idiosyncrantic detail that brings the cast of more than 100 characters to expedient and effervescent life. I fell in love with each of them so hard and so fast that I knew within the first few chapters this book would break my heart. Put down whatever you’re trudging through right now and join me in making this a Lonesome Dove summer. You won’t regret it.

Speaking of summer, this new SPF 50 mineral face stick from Dune is the best performance sunscreen I’ve ever tried. Goes on smooth and easy (the stick has a nice built-in groove that helps it fill the curves of your face), leaves absolutely no cast, and really works. I spent Saturday from 1030 AM to 630 PM rotisserie chicken-ing myself out at the Rockaways last weekend and my face survived with just a few reapplications.

This salad is cold, crunchy, and extremely easy to make, especially if you opt for shredding a store-bought rotisserie chicken. If you want to level up ever so slightly, I poached two chicken breasts in some well-salted water with a few garlic cloves and a bundle of very sad cilantro I found in the back of my fridge. I’ve now eaten it for three lunches in a row and am still looking forward to tomorrow’s!
