I’m fresh back from the fashion shows in Milan and Paris, which is a dangerous time to shop. I’m having daydreams about Michael Rider’s sharp, assertive trousers at Celine, my mind dancing with visions of Demna’s clingy leather jackets at Gucci. I can feel my Amex burning a hole in the pocket of my vintage jeans.
Since my Powerball number hasn’t come up yet (I won’t tell anyone, but there will be signs), most of the designer gear that wows me on the runway remains safely in the realm of fashion fantasy. But the cool thing about menswear right now is there are spectacular ideas and creativity at every level, from the grandest luxury houses to the mainstay haberdashers to the experimental indie designers. And in any case, fashion can be bought, but style is a more potent and mysterious potion. Or at least that’s what I’ll tell myself when I leave the Prada store empty-handed.
