Israel Emergency Briefing - Header image

Dear Andy,

If the last few years have reminded us of anything, it's that major crises often result in mass displacement for the Jewish people. When Jews no longer feel safe in their communities — as they face overwhelming threats like rising antisemitism, the conflict in Ukraine, and the urgent situation in Israel — we must answer their call.

Thankfully, JDC has been the global Jewish 9-1-1 for nearly 112 years. From food to medicine to spiritual support, we've fortified Jews in need with the essentials required to lead dignified lives, along with something just as precious — the strength to build a brighter Jewish future.

Here are just a few key moments in this historic work:

1945-1947

After World War II, tens of thousands of newly liberated Holocaust survivors had nothing to their name. JDC shipped 227 million pounds of life-saving necessities that nourished body and soul, and in just two years, we aided more than 250,000 Jewish refugees in displaced persons (DP) camps across Europe.

1970s-1980s

JDC provided medical care, housing assistance, and an array of educational, religious, and cultural resources to thousands of “transmigrants” — Soviet Jews stranded in Rome and Vienna who were trying to emigrate to the West. In 1989 alone, JDC served over 66,000 transmigrants from places like Kyiv, Chișinău, Tbilisi, and beyond.

1991

When rebel forces surrounded Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, JDC helped plan and execute Operation Solomon, airlifting over 14,000 Jews to safety in Israel in just 36 hours.

2020s

After the crisis in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, Jews fearing for their safety dodged rocket-fire and shelling to make the treacherous journey out of the country. As they crossed the border, JDC was often their first sign of relief — to date, we have equipped more than 42,650 refugees with humanitarian aid.

These monumental efforts couldn't have happened without dedicated people like you. But our work remains unfinished.

Over the next week, we want to introduce you to a population of Jews who desperately need our help — internally displaced persons (IDPs). Torn between their embattled native cities and the promise of a better life abroad, IDPs are caught in a state of limbo, unable to return home and unable to move forward.

With your steadfast partnership, we are building pathways to resilience for these Jews, and I hope you will join me in learning more about their remarkable lives of quiet courage.

With gratitude,
