They had hopes and dreams that were derailed when they were wrongfully ensnared by the criminal legal system. Even then, they trusted in the principles enshrined in our nation’s founding documents of “justice for all” and “innocent until proven guilty.”
But our system failed to deliver on that promise.
Coerced false confessions. Withheld evidence. Flawed forensics. These are just some of the factors that led to the wrongful convictions of the nine people featured here. Together they lost 250 years of precious freedom for crimes they didn’t commit.
Some of them have been free just a few years, others over a decade. But for each of them, every moment is an act of freedom, an act of reclamation.
We invite you to learn more about their stories in our newest feature, “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness: Portraits of a Promise Broken and Restored.”
Next week, we’ll be sharing more of their reflections on how they find hope and joy and what it means to reclaim freedom right here in your inbox.
Spend time with their portraits, their stories, and reflections on what freedom means when it has been taken away — and how every moment after it is restored is an act of freedom.
