Hi Email,
I want to tell you a story about a beloved mountain in Colorado.
You don’t have to live here — or ever plan to hike a 14,000-foot peak — to understand why this matters. Because this isn’t just a story about a mountain. It’s about what happens when the outdoor places we love are suddenly lost. And what it takes to save them.
For many Coloradans, climbing a "fourteener" is a rite of passage — and Mount Democrat is one of the state's most iconic summits. But significant portions of the mountain, including the trailhead and the summit itself, were privately owned. Over the years, the landowner grew concerned about liability and closed the property. And just like that, one of Colorado's most beloved mountain adventures was lost.
That’s when The Conservation Fund stepped in. We moved quickly to purchase the property and transfer the land to the U.S. Forest Service. Now, hikers, families, and outdoor adventurers can once again experience this breathtaking place.
Because protecting land isn’t just about acres on a map. It’s about protecting experiences: that moment your breath catches at the top of a ridge, the morning you watch your kid hit their first summit, the quiet satisfaction of a trail hard-earned. These moments — and the landscapes that make them possible — must be protected.
Stories just like this are playing out across the country right now. A local park lost to development. A shoreline about to be gated. A stretch of river that families have fished for generations, suddenly inaccessible.
At The Conservation Fund, we make it our mission to protect these places, moving quickly before they’re lost. But we can only act with support from people like you.
