American University recently revised its faculty evaluation guidelines to better recognise public and interdisciplinary scholarship and move away from outdated metrics. Through inclusive, faculty-driven reforms and expanded definitions of excellence, Karen Baehler, Rachel Borchardt, Priya Doshi and Amanda Taylor show how aligning academic rewards with societal impact offers a model for more equitable recognition and reward for research staff in higher education.
