Sara’s husband, Emmy-winning actor Noah Wyle, is of Ukrainian-Jewish heritage, but his family are non-practicing. Meanwhile, Sara’s background, Irish Welsh—is decidedly non-Jewish.
From a young age, Sara had always felt drawn to Judaism, and she wanted to bring some clarity to the families’ ancestry and traditions for her daughter. This curiosity led Sara to research the steps necessary for a Jewish conversion. First step, Sara needed to find a rabbi she connected with—that rabbi was Rabbi Mari Chernow. It was Rabbi Chernow who suggested AJU’s Intro class.
When Sara learned the class was held on Zoom, she felt reservations about Zoom learning for two-and-a-half hours each week. “I wasn’t sure I could focus on a computer screen that long.”
She went for it anyway—and ultimately, her class, led by Rabbi Benjamin Kramer, ended up being the “loveliest experience,” she said. “I can’t recommend the AJU enough. It has a clear, comprehensive and wildly engaging program, even on Zoom. It’s a wonderful way to begin your Jewish journey.”
