Why are we still making shorts this differently for boys and girls?

Walk into almost any kids' store and you'll notice a pattern. Girls' shorts are often much shorter, while boys' shorts are almost down to their knees.

And it makes you wonder… why?

Why are we deciding how much coverage kids should have based on whether they're shopping in the girls' aisle or the boys' aisle?
