Instead of digging their toes into the sand during sunset over Spring Break, animal science students were knee-deep in hay at 2 a.m. to welcome a new foal called Charm at the Campus Farm.
Want to make your math homework disappear? Matt Baker ’94 has a better idea: Add the calculations to the tricks, and poof. He's garnered international renown as both a mathematician and a magician, often intertwining the two passions. This week, he'll be at UMD as co-organizer of the First International Conference on Mathematics and Magic.
As mathematicians tackle increasingly complex questions, researchers need better AI systems. UMD will lead a new cross-institutional research effort, supported by a $2.6 million award from DARPA, designed to dramatically accelerate mathematical discovery by combining advanced AI with deep human expertise in computer science and mathematics.
