A girl, an apparition and a feast

The statue of the Virgin Mary in the Grotto in Lourdes, France.

Dear Andy,

As we commemorate today’s Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, we remember the appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Saint Bernadette in Lourdes, France, in 1858.

Bernadette, a young teenager at the time, received a total of 18 apparitions from the Virgin at a grotto. This time was marked by prayer, penance and miraculous healing spring water.

Lourdes is a popular Catholic pilgrimage site for those seeking physical cures and spiritual renewal. St. Bernadette’s encounters remind us that miracles can happen — even today — when we step out in faith and humility.
