I’m excited to share some new work that has come out of the kiln this week as part of my ongoing collection, Grounded in Place. Note: I’ve gone wild with the wooden balls! I used a few in the previous drop and think they’re just such a gorgeous accent piece with the warm tones of the black Piha sand within the clay.

Grounded in Place is a collection I’ve been developing since the start of the year. It’s inspired by my recent visit to Japan and witnessing its distinctively unique regional pottery aesthetics. These are shaped by the local materials, where the object becomes inherently connected to place.

In my work I explore this idea of my work belonging to a place by incorporating sand from Piha Beach, New Zealand (my home country where I grew up) and used coffee grounds from my local roaster in Vancouver (where I live now). It’s a quest in creating lusciously tactile ceramics that tell an evolving, place-based story.

The XL Platter

Over the last few months I’ve discovered that a thin layer of white clay slip poured inside really offsets the natural tones of the dark sand mixed into the overall piece.

The clear glaze inside finishes it off, also in beautiful contrast to the matte clay.

I couldn’t be happier with the result!

All our bottle vases with wooden balls have a layer of the white slip inside as well, it just looks so good.

Porcelain swirled with black, iron rich sand from Piha Beach NZ, used coffee grounds from Honest to Pete roasters at the Beaumont Studios and grog. The movement of the potter’s wheel is what creates the pattern. The interior has been sealed with a clear glaze.

Custom Work

I’ve been very grateful to be busy with some custom orders last month.

Here are some of my favourites.

Butter dishes

Special clay body mix of NZ sand from Piha Beach and coffee grounds. Complete with a wooden ball handle, of course.

Sculptural Wall Plate

A custom design with an abstract reference to the sun.
14” wide with tiered levels and specks of gold leaf to catch your eye.
This was a very unique piece, unlike my usual work, but very fun to work on.

Tall, narrow vases

The request was for a pair of matching vases to fill these shallow cupboards within my customer’s powder room.
The shelf was only 3” deep but we wanted something with a lot height.
I cant wait to see how her florist ends up styling these vases - the current stems are just a placeholder.

TIP: If you are not comfortable styling flowers, fresh or dried, head to your local florist (ideally one that has a single stem flower bar) and they will happily create a custom bouquet to fit the vase!
