He’s here to spill the tea on otters—and why they’re not just cute little fluffballs but tough, tenacious survivors! Once hunted nearly to extinction for their fur, sea otters are making a comeback. Big news: We’ve completed our brand new Sea Otter Conservation Center! For over 40 years, we’ve been California’s go-to team for rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing stranded sea otters back into the wild. Now we’ve leveled up! Our new facility is bigger, better, and specially designed to provide top-tier care for even more rescued otters. This upgrade wouldn’t have been possible without help from our fronds—our incredible supporters, members, and donors. Together, we're working toward the long-term recovery of sea otters in California.
Ocean Learning Adventures, a free bilingual summer camp for middle schoolers, connects local students with the ocean in their own backyard. Through kayaking, snorkeling, science projects, and lessons about Monterey Bay, we inspire the next generation of ocean stewards while honoring their language and culture. During Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15to October 15), we celebrate Héctor, a dedicated volunteer who supports the OLAs program and connects with students in both English and Spanish. Join us in honoring people like Héctor, who link heritage, community, and the ocean.
The otters at the Aquarium aren’t just here for the free clams; they’ve got a serious job to do! As furry foster parents, our exhibit otters teach stranded pups the skills they need to survive and thrive in the wild. Once they’re ready, these pups join a new raft outside the Aquarium walls.
Next time you visit, take a moment to appreciate these hardworking otters on exhibit, then head to the outdoor observation deck to gaze out at the wild rafts!
