What Blue Light Actually Is (And Isn't)
THE SPECTRUM REALITY
Blue light is simply light with wavelengths between 380-500 nanometers - part of the normal visible spectrum your eyes encounter constantly from the sun, screens, fluorescent lights, and LEDs.
Blue light isn't inherently harmful. The sun emits far more blue light than any screen - roughly 10 times more intensity. Screens are actually relatively mild blue light sources, despite their reputation.
What makes screen blue light different isn't the color itself - it's the context. You stare at screens at close range, without blinking properly, for extended periods, in controlled indoor lighting. The sun's blue light comes with UV (which screens filter out), from variable distances, with natural blinking patterns.
THE MELATONIN CONNECTION
Blue light suppresses melatonin production - the hormone that tells your body it's time to sleep.
This is real and measurable. Wavelengths between 460-480 nanometers most effectively trigger this suppression. When you use screens in the evening, particularly high-blue-light displays, you're sending a "stay awake" signal to your brain.
Interestingly, this suppression happens whether or not you perceive the light as "blue." Your intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (specialised light-sensing cells) detect this wavelength range specifically, separate from your visual perception.
FOCUS AND ACCOMMODATION
Here's something many people don't realize: screens with significant blue light output can subtly affect how your eyes focus.
Your eye's lens has specific wavelength-dependent focusing properties. Blue light focuses slightly differently than red light (a phenomenon called chromatic aberration). Your eye muscles work slightly harder to maintain sharp focus on blue-rich screens, accumulating fatigue throughout the day.
Add this to the 60% reduction in blinking rate when concentrating on screens, and by evening, your focusing muscles are genuinely exhausted - manifesting as that characteristic eye strain sensation and difficulty refocusing to distant objects.
