Have you ever heard of milk glass? Milk glass is a type of opaque or translucent glass recognized by its soft, milky-white appearance. Although similar white glass vessels were made in ancient Egypt, the material now known as milk glass was first produced in Venice during the 16th century and later became especially popular in America and England from the 19th century through the late 20th century.

Milk glass once flourished in U.S. factories, but modern materials have replaced it due to cost and efficiency. Despite its decline in commercial production, this unique glass remains a favorite among collectors for its distinctive look and enduring quality. Today, only a handful of Japanese artisans continue to craft handmade milk glass mugs, a process that takes six painstaking days, from molten
extraction to meticulous finishing.
|
Each mug features intricate graphic details applied by skilled pottery artists in Gifu Prefecture, ensuring that the artwork is permanently embedded. The hallmark of milk glass is its enchanting translucency, which subtly changes with light, giving each piece its own unique visual charm.
