This week, we’re introducing the Harionago Selvedge, a 14oz Japanese selvedge denim with an unusually wild and hairy surface. Woven at low tension and left unsinged, its texture takes inspiration from Harionago, the barbed-haired yōkai of Japanese folklore.

Most denim undergoes a process called singeing, in which loose cotton fibers are burned away to create a cleaner, smoother surface. The Harionago Selvedge skips this step, preserving the raised fibers across the face of the fabric and giving the denim its pronounced hairy texture.
The 14oz denim is also woven at low tension, allowing the cotton yarns to retain more of their natural shape rather than being pulled tightly into a perfectly uniform weave. This produces subtle irregularities in the fabric, with loose fibers and variations in texture that will become more visible as the denim is worn.
Its warp yarns are rope dyed in indigo. Bundles of cotton yarn are repeatedly dipped into indigo and exposed to air between each immersion, gradually building layers of colour around a lighter core. As the exterior dye wears away, the denim develops creases, abrasion marks, and high-contrast fades unique to the wearer.

Harionago, is a yōkai associated with the Japanese island of Shikoku. Also known as Hari Onna, she is described as a beautiful woman with extraordinarily long hair ending in sharp, hook-like barbs.
According to the legend, Harionago wanders the roads at night and smiles at passing men. When her smile is returned, her hair lashes outward, wrapping around and ensnaring her victim.
Her name is commonly translated as “Hook Woman” or “Barbed-Hair Woman.” The connection to the denim is visible across its surface, where tangled cotton fibers rise from the weave like loose strands of hair.

Canadian artist Jacqui Oakley created the custom artwork for the release, depicting Harionago through flowing linework that draws attention to her long, barbed hair. The illustration appears on the accompanying flasher, while a vegetable-tanned leather patch with black foil embossing completes the jeans.
Each pair is cut, sewn, and finished in Canada with antique copper hardware and a button fly.
