Stories about the world’s water are illuminated in these interactive MapMaker maps, developed from the work of National Geographic Explorer Marc Bierkens and his team at Utrecht University. One map details demand for water; another identifies gaps by examining how much usage is sustainable for the region’s rivers and groundwaters. Both maps also pinpoint stories about freshwater issues that learners have encountered in their own communities.

Mapping the World's Watersheds

With this Open Educational Resource (OER), students have a hands-on learning opportunity to use their critical thinking and geographic skills. By locating rivers and tracing watersheds on a world map, they can see how watersheds connect to the ocean. They can compare and contrast the shapes of various watersheds and discuss how topography influences their shapes. Ask students: Why do you think watersheds are shaped the way they are?

Tracking Our Plastic: Sea to Source

How can we stop plastic waste from entering and traveling through the world's waterways? How does plastic go from me to the sea? Students examine the world's plastic problem and learn from National Geographic's “Sea to Source: Ganges” expedition as it tracks the radiating impacts of plastic. Students follow the movement of water and the waste it carries, and practice collecting geospatial, observational, and social science data on local plastic waste.

Interactive Map: Lifeline of the Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta, a vast fan-shaped wetland located in the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, receives its life-giving waters from a water tower countries away, in the highlands of Angola. Share With Learners: National Geographic Explorer Discovers a New Dinosaur!

National Geographic Explorer Diego Pol and a team of researchers and paleontologists from Argentina and Uruguay working near northern Patagonia have identified a new long-necked dinosaur species, Chadititan calvoi! The new species, whose name means “titan of the salt,” is a herbivorous titanosaur belonging to the Rinconsaurian group, known for their uniquely slender bodies compared to other titanosaurs. Chadititan was a small, slender dinosaur estimated to measure about 7 meters in length. Its well-preserved bones show that it had elongated vertebrate and delicate limb bones that set it apart from its relatives.
