Brown University researchers are developing a new way to study what’s under the surface of Mars

A team of planetary scientists at Brown has developed a promising new way to peer beneath the dusty surface of Mars and other planetary bodies. The researchers found that the layers of rock and other material blasted out of a crater by an impact can vary in size depending upon what materials are present beneath the impact point — an insight that could help scientists spot buried glaciers and more using data from orbital satellites.

Will AI ever understand language like humans?

Large language models are becoming increasingly adept at creating human-like text and answering questions, but whether they can understand the meaning of the words they generate is a hotly debated issue. “It’s a computational system that we’re treating as though it’s an organic system, like as though it was created by something that wasn’t us,” Associate Professor of Computer Science Ellie Pavlick said.

What’s the best way to wake up?

Circadian rhythms regulate the body’s sleep-wake cycle, as well as metabolism, appetite, hormones, mood, body temperature and cognitive function. This means waking up at the same time each day is important, according to Associate Professor of Medicine Dr. Katherine Sharkey, a sleep researcher at Brown, who said sticking to a typical wake-up time on weekends and taking a nap later in the day helps circadian rhythms stay in sync.

softball team admires a bracket

Brown’s varsity softball team added a new crown to its collection this month when the team beat rival Princeton 4-1 to claim the Ivy League Tournament Championship. With the win, the Bears clinched a spot in the NCAA Division I Softball Championship for the first time since 1997. “We are a gritty bunch and genuinely put the success of the program first,” Head Coach Mary Holt-Kelsch said. “We all understood that we were playing for something much bigger than ourselves.” Although the team did not advance past the first round of the NCAA tournament, pitcher Alexis Guevara (center) said she and the team’s other seniors are graduating on a high note. In throwing a complete game against Princeton, Guevara earned her 20th win of the season, becoming just the second 20-game winner in program history. “This is something that the other seniors and I have been working toward for four years,” said Guevara, who was named First Team All-Ivy and the Ivy League Tournament’s most outstanding player. “I couldn’t ask for a better way to end my softball journey.” Photo courtesy of the Ivy League.
