Andy, Congress has not taken the necessary steps and the USDA has refused to allocate emergency funds to ensure people receive their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payments in November as the government shutdown persists. As of this weekend, a heartbreaking 90,000 families didn’t receive their benefits in San Francisco and Marin. That’s on top of the $186 billion in cuts passed earlier this year, ripping away critical benefits over the next 10 years from families, children, seniors and veterans who are already struggling to put food on the table. SNAP provides nine meals for every one meal we can distribute. No food bank — not even ours — can fill that gap. And with food costs still 3X higher than before the pandemic, we are already stretched to meet the need. We need Congress to know that cuts to SNAP are unacceptable.
