The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) is a network of more than 900 scientific instruments that monitor ocean conditions and climate impacts across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Built to operate for decades, the system is being shut down and removed after just over 10 years in operation.

The consequences are profound.

These instruments track warming waters, shifting ocean currents, changing marine ecosystems and other conditions that affect fisheries, wildlife, coastal economies and community resilience. Once they are removed, years of future data—and the scientific insights that come with it—could be lost.

As Chris Robbins, Ocean Conservancy's Associate Director of Scientific Initiatives, put it:

"Walking away from a $368-million investment in a state-of-the-art system, a feat of engineering already paid for by the American people, is absolutely myopic."

This decision is part of a broader effort to weaken the federal government's ability to monitor and understand climate change. Now, one of the nation's most important ocean-observation systems is becoming another casualty.
