Bucks Win, Eh No. 1 Buckeyes Improve to 5-0, Defeat Minnesota 42-3 |
No. 1 Ohio State extended its nation-leading winning streak to nine consecutive games with a 42-3 victory over the Minnesota Golden Gophers last night under the lights of Ohio Stadium. Julian Sayin led the Ohio State offense, completing 23-of-27 for 326 yards and three touchdowns while Carnell Tate set career highs hauling in nine receptions for 183 yards including a 44-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Jeremiah Smith added an additional seven receptions for 67 yards and two trips to the end zone.
After allowing a field goal on the opening drive, defensive coordinator Matt Patricia and the Silver Bullets shut down the Minnesota offense the rest of the way allowing just 68 rushing yards and 94 passing yards. Linebackers Sonny Styles and Payton Pierce led the Buckeyes with a combined 15 tackles and two tackles-for-loss on the day with the rest of the Ohio State defense recording an additional five tackles-for-loss and a sack. The Scarlet and Gray hit the road next weekend (Saturday, Oct. 11) as the Buckeyes head to Champaign, Ill. for a Top 25 showdown against the Illinois Fighting Illini (5-1). The Battle for the Illibuck will kick off at noon ET on FOX.
