Mount Everest continues to capture our collective imagination, and for the last 30 years Outside has reported on the spring climbing season on the world’s highest peak. In 2025, we’re taking our coverage to new heights—literally. We are sending veteran reporter Ben Ayers to Everest Base Camp at 17,500 feet for our newest project, called Outside: Dispatches from Everest.
Every day, Ben will write stories and record videos that chronicle the drama, controversy, and intrigue on Everest.
Major stories are already brewing for 2025:
- Flying drones will be used to remove trash from the peak
- Experimental expeditions will use untested methods to ascend the peak faster than ever
- Several ultrarunners are hoping to reach the top in record time
Ben will cover these topics and more with on-the-ground interviews and eyewitness accounts.
Ben will also provide a first-person view of what it’s like to get to Everest Base Camp. Ben will start his journey in downtown Kathmandu in mid-April before hiking from the town of Lukla in the foothills of the Himalayas up to Base Camp. Along the way, Ben will introduce us to historic and cultural landmarks, noteworthy climbers, and the guides who are steering Nepal’s climbing industry.
