Mentsen is a partnership between Japanese designers Yasuyuki Sakurai and Risa Sano, and a London based practice founded in 2011 working somewhere between craft and industrial design. The studio name, meaning ‘lines and surfaces’ in Japanese, references the studio’s work in different mediums and scales; from furniture and product design to one-off handmade objects and flat works. The mobiles are balanced sculptural forms born out of the waste of Mentsen's larger design projects. Rather than discarding these small wooden elements, the London duo has instead brought them back to life - combining them in a way that celebrates the imperfections of natural materials. “Timber, once part of a unique tree, possesses distinctive features such as knots, colouring or cracks, rendering them unsuitable for certain applications.” - Mentsen
