Friend, this may not come as a surprise, but at Trust for Public Land, we really believe in the power of trails.

But right now, on Long Island, many people walking or biking have little choice but to travel alongside vehicles on some of the busiest, most dangerous roads in New York.

That’s why we’ve set an ambitious goal to build the Long Island Greenway: a nearly 200-mile trail stretching from the concrete jungle of Manhattan all the way to the beaches of Montauk. 

The need is urgent. 

In 2020, New York State opened the Empire State Trail, a continuous 750-mile multiuse pathway that spans the state from the Canadian border and Buffalo to the Battery at the tip of Manhattan.  

But it ends there—leaving out more than 8 million New Yorkers who live east of the city. 

The Long Island Greenway would help close that gap, creating safe connections between communities and giving millions of people new ways to get around without relying on busy roads.
